The History of Mockingbird Lane Florist

Mockingbird Lane Florist has been a cherished part of the Dallas community since its establishment in 1967. The journey began when Helen Shelton purchased Higgins Florist in Dallas, renaming it Mockingbird Lane Florist. Helen's vision and dedication laid the foundation for a family business steeped in quality and creativity.

In 1972, Helen’s son, John Liland II, and his wife, Brenda, joined her in the flower shop while attending SMU. Their commitment to the floral industry grew quickly, and during their final semester at SMU, John and Brenda purchased another flower shop, Petal Shop Florist in Lakewood on Abrams Road. They re-branded it as Liland's of Dallas and, for 19 years, provided exceptional flower delivery, wedding design, and event services to the Dallas area.

In 1991, Helen decided to retire and entrusted John and Brenda with the future of Mockingbird Lane Florist. As part of this transition, the couple reorganized their operations, separating the florist shop from their event business. Brenda’s sister, Delene Bell, took over the event company and moved its operations to a warehouse and event-focused location.

Today, John and Brenda’s legacy continues through their daughters, Amber Harris and Ashley Pappas, both SMU graduates who reside in Dallas with their families.
